It was midday on a Friday. The Roane County United Way received a phone call from a distraught woman. At first the caller could not talk because she was so upset. Once the caller calmed down, she advised that her grandfather’s brother and his son were in a car accident that morning. Her grandfather’s brother was killed and his son was in surgery. She did not know the condition of the son at that time. She said that her grandfather was not aware that his brother had died in the accident, they were not telling him. Both family members had been taken to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga. Caller said that her grandfather needed gas money to get to the hospital and wondered if Roane County United Way could help.
Once the information was confirmed, Roane County United Way met with the grandfather at a local gas station and filled his truck with the needed gas to make it to the hospital to be with his family.
On Monday, the grandfather spoke with a Roane County United Way representative and thanked them for the help in getting him with his family, in time of need.
